MACOMB, Il – The student-led nonprofit RockyTHON of Western Illinois University has begun its annual fundraising endeavor for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals benefiting the St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Cardinal Glennon. With a new year of events and an even higher goal.
Co-President Makena Martin spoke about the mission and plans of RockyTHON.
“RockyTHON raises funds to support families, fund therapy dogs, and provide necessary supplies to help kids with illness live their childhoods,” Martin said. “Last year, we raised $42,046. This year, we are reaching even higher with a goal of $100,000.”
The organization works all year round, promoting several activities on campus and within the community. RockyTHON hosted their first fundraising event, Pancake Dinner, on Nov. 7, 2024, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the American Legion. From the event, they raised $5,217. To raise more money, RockyTHON is planning other events including Spaghetti Dinner on Feb. 20, 2025, followed by RockyTHON’s Main Event on March 29, 2025.
Anchoring the whole year’s campaign is an appropriately-named main event: a 12-hour dance marathon. Attendees are encouraged to stand on their feet at the event –dancing and celebrating the money raised. Before the night ends, a number flip will be revealed, showing the total amount raised.
What started as a part of the nation-wide movement, Dance Marathon, RockyTHON has rebranded into an event all its own here at WIU. This organization is still very passionate about raising funds for local Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals to put smiles on families and help support hospital services.
But the festivities – which include a silent auction and live performances – aren’t the only focus of RockyTHON. Community support, in all forms, is essential. “Children’s Miracle Network hospitals never turn down a child or family due to an inability to pay,” Martin pointed out. “Every dollar helps, and with this team, together we can change kids’ health for a healthier future.”
With a goal of $100,000, RockyTHON relies on students, staff, and the larger Macomb community to get involved. “We cannot do this work without the help of all of you,” Martin emphasized. “Join us at our events and be part of making a difference in the lives of children and families who need it most.”
